3 British people were among the 9 climbers found dead today due to a huge avalanche in the French Alpine ski resort of Chamonix.

Those killed were believed to be from the UK, Spain, Germany and Switzerland after an avalanche struck on the slopes of Mont Maudit.

The avalanche was what appeared to be the most deadly of recent years and a total of 15 people have minor injuries as well as the 9 that have died. All of these people involved in the natural disaster were very experienced climbers who were attempting to scale Europe’s highest peak (Mont Blanc) on one of the more difficult routes.

Chamonix’s mayor Jean-Louis Verdier told Reuters news agency, “It’s a steep mountain face. There are big plates of snow where an avalanche can easily occur. But this morning we had no reason to expect an avalanche of this size and such a tragedy.”

The wind was incredibly strong pushing the slabs of snow off the mountain side.  People have commented that it was a tragic accident and they will always be remembered.
