In a long-awaited speech today in London, David Cameron pledged to give the British people a simple in/out vote on whether they want Britain to be a part of the EU by 2017 when we will have a new government. The Conservatives are all for backing out of the EU however the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is not so sure that it’s a good idea.
“It is time for the British people to have their say; it is time to settle this European question in British politics. I say to the British people: this will be your decision.” The Prime Minister explained. Mr Cameron says he wants to “renegotiate relationships with the EU” however he did not state what powers he would want the UK to retake or what would happen if the negotiations did not go his way. Many people across the country are in favour of the PM’s bid but not everyone agrees.
David Cameron’s coalition partner and deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, thinks that leaving the EU will mean “years of uncertainty” and that the change is “not in the national interest”. As well as Clegg, the Labour party is also criticising the PM’s decision saying that Cameron is “weak” and being “driven by party interest”.
So with different opinions from different people Britain’s future in the EU is very unclear. What do you think, should Britain come out of the EU?
